Direct federal tax: deduction for health insurance premium to be increased

The Federal Council has discussed increasing tax deductions for health insurance premiums.

On June 22, 2022, the Federal Council approved the dispatch on the Federal Law on Direct Federal Tax and intends to increase the deductions for insurance premiums and interest on savings for direct federal tax purposes as follows:

  • Maximum deduction for single persons from currently Fr. 1'700 to Fr. 3'000

  • Maximum deduction for married couples from currently Fr. 3'500 to Fr. 6'000

  • Deductions for a child or a person in need of support from currently Fr. 700 to Fr. 1'200

Please note that the cantons can set their own deductions for cantonal and municipal taxes as before. Since the amendment of the law is subject to an optional referendum, the final implementation and entry into force is currently still open. For further information: LINK
