Voting Sunday: People say “yes” to individual taxation

Yesterday, Sunday, March 8, 2026, Swiss voters approved the Federal Act on Individual Taxation (to the voting results).

The so-called “family taxation” system will thus be abolished in favor of individual taxation. In future, all individuals will be taxed individually, regardless of their marital status, and will therefore also have to submit separate tax returns. We would like to refer you to our latest publication on this topic.

The cantons now have six years to implement the change. Individual taxation will therefore be implemented by January 1, 2032, at the latest.

There is still some uncertainty regarding the popular initiative to abolish the “marriage penalty” proposed by the political party “Die Mitte”, which, if accepted, would be contrary to individual taxation. However, it is still unclear whether and when a vote will take place.
